World Wide Views on Global Warming

One hundred men and women representing all regions of Japan and various ages and hometowns gathered and held group discussions on four themes lasting between one and one-and-a-half hours each. The themes were, “climate change and its consequences,” “long-term goals and urgency,” “dealing with greenhouse gas emissions,” and “the economy of technology and adaptation.” First, participants viewed a video introducing the theme and sharing information, and then the questions relating to the theme were presented. Next, participants were divided into groups of five or six (including one facilitator), and discussions were conducted. Afterward, each group voted to determine their answer to each question. The results of each group were sent to Copenhagen after everyone had reassembled, and the results of each country were publicly announced on the event’s Internet home page in real time. After the four sessions ended, a proposal session began in which each group created policy proposals for COP15. Finally, the top three proposals were determined by an overall vote and sent to the Danish Board of Technology (DBT).
